In 2018 we celebrate 41 years of the National One Act Playwriting Competition. This festival within the festival sees the stage premiere of the finalist plays from the National One-Act Playwriting Competition.

With nearly 70 entries from across Australia, New Zealand, USA, and PNG. Three short, sharp, varied plays in one evening.
With $8,000 in prize money, including the $5,000 Eleanor Nimmo Prize for Best Play plus the Nancy Cato Audience Choice Award, the awards presentation after the final performance on Saturday afternoon is always eagerly awaited.
Noosa Arts Theatre is proud to offer this rather unique opportunity to aspiring and established playwrights and showcase the finalists as part of the NOOSA alive! Festival.

‘An Autumn Romance’ by Cerise deGelder

Elle has a comfortable life, she is single and independent, shares her home with two cats and has a steady income as a successful writer of TV soaps/ Then one night a handsome lead actor makes her an offer she really should refuse an things take a sinister turn in TV town! Tune in to our festival and all will be revealed – or maybe next week.

‘Premeditated Misadventure’ by Richard Harris 

Freya adopted, discovers that her biological mother may have been murdered by her step-father, who had then abandoned her. He is now living locally- with his sixth wife. He profited from the demise of all of his previous wives who each died by misadventure. Suspicious Freya decides to investigate.

‘Old Maids’ by Ruth Tuxworth

There are two old maids in this tale: Bridie who falls into an unexpected, socially unacceptable love and her own ‘Old Maid’ who tells the truth of it. Issues of family tension, abandonment, forbidden love, hypocrisy,

self-harming, natural justice and faith are all bubbling under the

brittle surface as the family prepares for a wedding.
